The Universal Game Mechanic (revised)

BTW, Emp,

The other thing I like about just listing the task DM without a name tag is that is promotes "non-standard" DMs to the task roll.

Have the standard UGM task numbers kinda funnels GMs into multiples of two (+4, +2, -2, -8, etc).

Heck, there's nothing wrong with having +3 or -7 on a task roll. (And, that's even more friendly with CT...where you'll find odd numbers sometimes "roll 9+" instead of "roll 8+" and things like that).

I like how just having the mods encourages a GM to use non-standard DMs.

Those non-standard DMs, BTW, also provide even more opportunity for differentation between stats using UGM too.

I like it. I like it.

(Can you tell?)

Hell, you could even forget about difficulty names (routine, standard etc) and write your "task profile" as a skill, attribute and difficulty DM, i.e. Computer/INT/-2.
Nah.... Do Skill, Attribute, and target

Computer/INT/10+

Ah... a thing of beauty....

I love that too

Problem doing it that way, Emp...

It's the Crit Success/Crit Failure rule.

I like putting the roll in the task line, but that's going to make it harder for the CS/CF check.

For example: We roll boxcars, and we need to roll our stat or less on 3D, using all modifiers used during the roll.

If our task was Computer/INT/10+, that's kinda hard to figure out.

But, if we leave it like it was--Computer/INT/-2--then we know we use a -2DM on the CS check.

I'm thinking we've got to keep the modifier, not the roll, in the task line.

Thoughts?

Hmmm... Good point. And not that difficult to stick with the Computer/INT/-2 rule either - it's like the CT combat system (for combat, just replace this difficulty DM with the Range Matrix DM).

Computer/INT/10+

My INT is 6. Computer skill is +1. Add 8 for the base... and subtract the target of +10. 6 + 1 + (8 - 10).

Yep. Kinda ugly.

But... isn't there a problem with the critical failure.

High stats and skills and low difficulty all increase my chance for a critical success... AND they increase the chance of failure, too.

Maybe you should roll against (12 - stat) + (5 - stat) - Difficulty? Or maybe for Critical Success... you roll low, but for Critical Failure you roll HIGH.
