CT/MT/MGT hybrid using select parts of T5 now as well.

That is a good starter explanation of my sourcing. In past years I used a lot of GURPS:Space 1st and 2nd editions as they had some good systemless bits in them.

Now I go for less complex cores with the option to add detail as needed.

I started GM Traveller using nothing but index cards for everything, characters. worlds, ships, you name it. As these game aged the amount of paper work as a active GM increased, and my enjoyment went down.

One of the greats moments I have had in the past few years was the release of MgT, my index cards where viable again. I suspect one could get a T5 character on to an index card, so there is hope there.

T5 2nd edition?!

6th Edition…..surely?

Technically, T5 was the 6th edition and T4 was the 5th edition, because CT has two editions.

And that doesn't count outside editions: T20, MGT, GT, GTIW, HeroTrav.

T5 was started into playtesting before t20, GT, or MGT, but released after them.

CT could be counted as having 3+ editions considering the changes from 81' to the Traveller Book and/or Starter Traveller.... just Sayin.... :smirk:

Those changes are not sufficient for whole number "edition change" - the pre-81 vs post 81 changes are pretty impressive:
  • change of damages from Xd+Y to Xd
  • Surprise DM's (more in 2E)
  • Encounter distance table has more terrain types on the DM's table.
  • Combat movement handled slightly differently.
  • Changes in ship design requirements
    • in 1E, PP≥MD, in 2e PP≤max(MD, JD))
    • In 1E, computer must be able to run the correct jump prorgam, in 2E, it must have a model number at least equal the Jn.
    • Changes in the drive performance table
    • Changes in standard hull construction times (2E less across the board)
  • changes in nature of space encounter tables
  • Changes in ship combat scale (1E: 1"=1000mi, 10 minute turns; 2E: 1cm = 1000km, 1000s)

Noting the performance differences in the Bk2 drive tables:

MGT has a different table still, just for reference.

For actual play, I find that less is definitely more ... so I lean towards Classic Traveller modified with Rule 68A.

For STUFF (like Starships and Guns), More is More!
So I want CT compatibility, but I want to use Striker and MT and FF&S to get as much realism and chrome as I can before I shoehorn it into CT or MgT (which are fairly compatible for stuff).

I run this way. CT/MT for general play, but when I build things (way tooooo many things! We engineers tend to be that way) I go to MT/TNE/Striker plus house rules like monatomic hydrogen rockets ( such fun) with picked stuff from GT/T4/MgT. Yeah, I'm a packrat, I collect all kind of stuff!

Ya don't say?! That explains the feel it has of being closer to CT than MT or TNE ever did.

Hey, is the 1248 setting going to be post-shattered Imperium or a place where the Rebellion didn't take place a-la GT?

1248 Setting

Hey, is the 1248 setting going to be post-shattered Imperium or a place where the Rebellion didn't take place a-la GT?

Well, the 1248 setting is an already published setting (and is on the TNE CDROMs). It is the evolution of the TNE1200 setting (i.e. it is the "New Era" that eventually arises from the ashes of the Collapse and Recovery era ca. Year 1200, after the Recovery period has run its course). (It is also ruleset-neutral).

I believe the plans for T5 have to do with advancing the timeline beyond the 1248 New Era setting, which I would presume to mean that it is a continuation of the Rebellion/Collapse/Recovery/New Era timeline.

The OTU has the rebellion, and the OTU has Virus.

1248 still has virus, per the TNE2 disk. That disc's contents may be overwritten, may not; they were an MJD project.

From what I understand from Marc, Robject and Don, the post 1248 era is where the OTU is going to go forward from. Keep in mind: Robject and Don actually get to go hang with Marc. I don't. 2000+ miles too far to drive.

I'm not surprised that the OTU is going on through the collapse. Does this mean the setting will be that depicted in TNE plus some 47 years?

Pardon my ignorance, but what happened to the states surrounding the 3I? The Star Vikings Sourcebook makes reference to the Hivers being affected by the Virus but being able to recover from it relatively unscathed due to a few factors. Does this mean that the other major states, bar the Consulate, were overcome by the Virus and collapsed too?

What's MJD?

MJD=Martin J Daugherty. Part of the team that wrote T20, wrote much of the T20 supplements, Wrote some TNE novels for Marc....

Also writes non-fiction coffee-table books for a living.

And, yes, 1248 will be TNE+40 years.

And all of MJD's sourcebooks for the 1248 Era are already on the TNE2 CDROM. It details all of the history between the setting in the TNE Rulebook (ca 1200) thru the year 1248 (including the breakup of the Regency into several polities, the rise of the 4th Imperium under Emperor Avery centered on Usdiki in Gushemege Sector, and the many smaller polities that have popped up and continue to grow), as well as backstory of the 1130-1200 Virus Era. By 1248, Virus is largely under control in many regions, and has led to some Cym-AIs that are stable, some of whom have citizenship under the 4th Imperium.

T5 will presumably be detailing Charted Space history post-1248.

I really hope it is something a bit more original than a 4th Imperium - especially since the 3rd Imperium is alive and well in line of succession in 1248. The rebellion period should be renamed by future historians and the second civil war period.

Only kinda, there is a significant shift in government in the Regency. Myself I am hoping for a significant jump forward from 1248. We've got a book full of new toys to play with, so....

So grab that CD from FFE to pick up all the material?
