So grab that CD from FFE to pick up all the material?

YES!!!

Because it is too late for you to do it the way I did, new releases... (I also bought duplicates as I have tended to be hard on my books through the years. Now I have all of CT in PDF as well....

I really hope it is something a bit more original than a 4th Imperium - especially since the 3rd Imperium is alive and well in line of succession in 1248. The rebellion period should be renamed by future historians and the second civil war period.

There's be a few different contenders for the title of 4I wouldn't there? Not that the Vilani need anything other than Ziru Sirka, but other leftovers that clawed back up would likely try and use it as a way of generating a sense of legitimacy for their regimes.

So 'other' because I am currently running the best game of my life 'Beltstrike' on Storium.com. Rules hardly come into play at all, its all set setting. In my experience it's the one thing Traveller does best. It maintains a consistent and accessible setting accross all rules versions.

Have you actually looked at TNE? The setting's considerably altered by some fundamental aspects - like the lack of gravitic thrusters.

It's consistent only on a macro-level; the details vary considerably, due to the rulesets.

I played what we now call "Classic Traveller" back in the 80s. When I decided to start a Traveller campaign I started researching all the versions to figure out which one I would use. I selected Mongoose Traveller and here are the reasons:

Classic Traveller:I have many fond memories of this, but thought that after all this time it might be showing it's age a big. And while it is still awesome I no longer have any of the books and figured it might be time to move on. Therefore it became my "safety net", if nothing else was any good I always had this to fall back to.

MegaTraveller: Despite not being thrilled with the setting, it just looked to darn complicated. It's like they took everything that anyone ever thought might be missing from the original and tossed it in there. So it went from simple to ridiculous.

Traveller: TNE: Quite simply I couldn't find much on this one and what I could find wasn't very positive.

Mongoose Traveller: This came across as an enahanced version of Classic, but not with all the stuff that MegaTraveller added. It was somewhere in between and it kept a lot of the flavor and what I loved about the original. It moved to the top of my list quite quickly. The fact that you could still purchase books new was a big plus as well.

T5: I had high hopes for this. I was excited when I found out about it. Then I started reading reviews and while there was nothing bad about the actual game play and the system, what people were saying about the book scared me. It was poorly organized and HUGE. And at 700 pages there was no doubt about the HUGE part. I was able to get a look at the book as well and the reviews are right. Trying to follow what is going on in that book gave me a headache.

So that is my 2 cents on each version from the research I did. The other thing I like about the Mongoose version is that it is close enough to Classic that I can use stuff I find that was written/designed for Classic and pretty easily modify it for use in Mongoose.

Of course I also just found out that another patron of my local gaming store happens to have a large collection of Traveller books from the 80s (I am assuming mostly Classic) and is looking to sell them. He is going to send me some pics of what he has and we are going to get together at the store this week. So I might be shifting things more to Classic... :)

The same can be said for T5.

The main system is mongoose, but I stole a bunch of ship designs and illustrations from CT as I feel like it.

CT has rather nice pictures...

Mongoose Traveller and Classic Traveller are the baseline, but the only version I have not taken something worthwhile from is Traveller for Hero because I've never seen it.

You missed out... it's got one of the best whole-OTU overviews I've seen.

Based on that I went looking for it and it seems that I can't find it.

The most recent reference to it I found was from 2/15/15 by some guy calling himself "donm61873" (and referring to himself as the "Big Purple Traveller Dinosaur", who the heck could that be I wonder.... ;) )over at RPG.net about it being re-published on a CDROM from FFE "in the future"."

If the OTU info is as good as you say it was, I really hope we don't have to wait until the far future to get it....

(Ducks under his desk just in case people decide to toss rotten veggies at him for that so-horrible-it-might-be-funny joke he just made....)

If Mongoose had combined books 4-8 in the "core" it would have been too cool to argue with. I love more detailed chargen but the options provided get kinda repetitive if you're in for a few terms.

So I stick with CT, personally preferring Books 1-8, though I play more than run. T5 was not my thing.

CT setting to 1115, and 1115+ Lorenverse setting, using gear, kit & equipment from pretty-much anywhere, with MT 'mechanics'. OK, it's somewhat bastardised, but it works :)

The rules matter less to me than the OTU setting. Regardless of RPG genre, I tend to use whatever rules are currently supported.

Cheers,

Baron Ovka

CT with MT Character generation. First Traveller product purchased was The Traveller Book.

For setting I have been running a PBEM game set in the spinward marches in the time just before the Fifth Frontier War. The characters are involved in scenarios that in some cases influence either the start of the war or the end of it. Try as they might, it will happen...
