Starter Traveller

I just looked in my copy of Bk2 (not the ones from my 1983 Deluxe box... those are STILL missing) but the ones I got recently as an unopened boxed set...

and what do ya know? The Bk2 includes a -1 to hit for pulse lasers in the to-hit mods.

There's a seller on EBay - panzermeyer - who sells off lots of wargames, and he occasionally has GDW stuff. I bought a s/w copy of Starter Traveller just a few weeks ago from him for about $10. Give him a gander.

Also, regarding the trade-routes table, I posted it a long time ago right here, so nobody need worry about copyright violation but me.

Your "new" boxed set isn't 1st edition by any chance is it?
If it's © 1977 it's first edition and if it's ©1977,1981 then it's second edition.

First edition has the -1 to hit (but not the extra damage that Starter Traveller mentions) for pulse lasers, along with jump capable missiles, jump ships with no power plant, the trade route table, DM's for personal weapon damage... etc. ;)

I'm always kinda pleased as punch that I got one of these somewhat more 'n a year ago. Now that I'm playing Traveller, I get a chance to use it...

Say, that wouldn't be the same David Deitrick that did art for West End Games's Star Wars RPG, now would he?

Yeah, except that my box is long gone & long forgotten.

Oddly enough, I have kept track of my Starter Traveller dice, though.

I'm considering bidding for a Starter Traveller box at e-Bay. Could anybody tell me what were the exact contents? I'm particulary interested in know if there is a copy of the Spinward Marches map included. Thanks in advance.

I started playing Traveller with Starter Traveller. I think it's a great set of rules--well worth getting.

I think the title is a little misleading. "Starter" makes one think it's a stripped down version. It's really not. Sure there are some differences between LLBs 1-3 and the TB, but I find myself constantly referring to ST over and over again through my years of playing Traveller.

Sig (a couple of years ago in this thread) has already mentioned the pulse laser rule in ST (-1 to hit but two damage rolls).

If you ask me, the most valuable stuff that appears in Starter Traveller is the Range Band based version of Book 2 STARSHIP COMBAT.

I don't know too many people who use the (very hard to play) Vector based movement system shown in Book 2 and the the TB. Nobody wants to measure distances in mm with a ruler, and then convert mm to km, and blah, blah, blah.

With the spacecraft movement rules in Starter Traveller, Book 2 space combat all-of-a-sudden becomes a beautiful set of space combat rules that can be played on a hex map or a piece of graph paper...or, a GM can do away with plotting movement on maps all together and use the Range Band method to track ranges, allowing the GM to keep track of spacecraft ranges on a sheet of notebook paper in his GM's notebook, describing the action across the table to his players, keeping the game focused on the action--not counters on a hex board.

Starter Traveller Range Band rules, combined with Book 2 spacecraft combat, is my preferred space combat system for Traveller.

It's very fun. Very cool. And, very easy.

Heck, I just wrote those Sensor Rules to be used with Starter Traveller space combat.

IMO, Starter Traveller is well worth getting/having.
