T5 MAJOR RACES: ALIENS 1 - 8

Actually they were only refuted based on CT...

Every writeup of the Vargr states that the ancestors of the Vargr were taken from Terra 300,000 years ago and geneered into Vargr befor the Final War. Nothing else is needed to refute your notion.

Now, people of the Classic Era with the same grasp of science may very well refer to the Vargr as dog-men. Indeed, it would be well-nigh inevitable that they did so.

So moving on, the ultimate conclusion from most players seems to be that a good update for all the races has been a long time in the making. I'd whole heartedly agree. It's a shame that DGP never completed there race books as they were excellent. The T4 unreleased book was certainly welcome. Here's hoping for a terrific update in support of T5. ")

Just another tid bit on my Vargr are also dog men as opposed to just wolf men. Just putting this out there, no need to debate.

CT Adventure 12: Secret of the Ancientsk Page 4 bottom of the page:
"Vargr were created from Terran dogs through genetic manipulation by the Ancients...." :)

Also not wanting to restart the debate, but regardless of whatever the CT quote says, the Ancients were active from -310,000 to -290,000. Dogs (Canis Familiaris) were domesticated (by our earliest estimates) around -20,000. They could not have used dogs, because dogs did not exist yet. They could have only used whatever members of Genus Canis (or family Canidae) were extant at the time. The best you can say is that they used one or more wild species of Genus Canis that were extant at the time, that eventually developed into Canis Familiaris at a later date.

I'm done.

Sit boobo sit...LMAO!!! Lets see you get one of them to roll over and fetch the newspaper.:file_21::file_21::file_21:

How are the current ones from the Mongeese?

That's easy, incomplete and don't accurately update the DGP Megatraveller books in my firm opinion. The closest set to come close to updating the lot, were the GURPS Traveller aliens books. However it too falls short and never covered all the current races. Then there's a lot of minor races that could do with an update as well.

Cool, thanks for the heads up.

For the record it IS a made up word by Poul Andersons wife Karen Anderson in 1966 were it was first used.

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/sophont

If it has made it into English dictionaries you can credit it to the Andersons. The first usage was as in a science fiction novel. Sophos is different to [That word I've promised not to mention again]. Sophos is as you have stated a 'GREEK' word, it is not an English word and in Greek it essentially means wise. Nothing to do with Aliens.

[That word I've promised not to mention again], it completely fictional. Any incorporation into English dictionaries is purely coincidental and of the same merit is say 'The Klingon Dictionary' of words, eg it's all made up.

Please fellow Travellers, don't make me adopt this crappy word.
I chortle at the Brobdingnagian‎ implications this has to any cyborgs in your campaign.

(Sorry. Couldn't help myself)

Mongoose is working through the basic Aliens from Traveller and so far for the ones they have covered I think they ahve done a pretty good job. So far they have done: Aslan, Vargr, Darrians, Zhodani, Solomani, andf teh Dryones is being written at this time. Each book is updated and has more than the orginial write-up, so what more can you want. I think they have done a fine job and for someone buying them for the first time, they have lots of great details that will be most complete to flush out that culture.

The text for Aslan was decent; for Vargr, not good, but not horridly bad.

The art for both was toxically bad - matching neither the text nor the prior art. And most of it wasn't even good looking.

I have AM 1 thru 8 and a couple of DGP books, I'll stick with those for the time being.

Oh, and I have the books for the Great Unused Role Playing System.

I whole heartedly agree on those points and the issue of the artwork with the Mongoose Aliens books. It didn't capture Traveller very well for me either.

So you missed the strong Greek influence in Galanglic, then? Note several sector names and the family name of the Emperor, not to mention the common 'i' suffix on the names of alien races, starting with Humaniti.

If you aren't going to credit Poul Anderson with the influences he had on Traveller, then I suggest that you have read none of his works.

To the OP, whatever. I'm not buying another set of Alien books for this game. I like Traveller, but I've invested enough. The Galaxaid thing (or whatever it's called) sounds like something I may purchase. But in all seriousnous, I've got CT and GT books on the big races, and on some of the more wonky weird-a$$ races that I think were either marketing ploys or just bad ideas; intelligent Tyrannosaurs, as an example.

I'll stick with what I have, but hope people continue to get more involved and enjoy the game and setting.

That would be a shame, especially if new races are introduced. In any case I hope you get to at least read the new material should/when it emerges.

Hey at this point in my life, I just buy the new books as they come out and don't much care about the small details. Now I will say this I have played and collected D&D my total time that I have gamed some 37+ years, BUT stopped buying anything for D&D version 4.0. I will say I still buy a lot for Pathfinder 3.5 or 3.75 still but refuse to buy the D&D 4.0 stuff. I might look at 5.0 when that comes out, but even then I might not bother with that.

Now if you have the Traveller books of the past, well you really don't need the re-imaged Mongoose stuff but I would buy it anyway just to have it incase there is some new item that is added. Plus I like to show my game support for my hobby and the cost of anything is really not going to break any ones piggy bank.
