Vote Your Canon #4: Jump Torpedos (consensus: NOT)

Are jump torpedos canon?

Gunnery and pilot skill indicates a conscious understanding of the consequences of their actions, and optimum use of their capabilities.

Pecking one (dexterity).

So what happens to the torpedoes after they arrive at their destination? Do they keep making a noise until the power runs out then they become debris floating around the 100d?

In a busy system, how many of these things would be clogging up the traffic lanes, particularly if they are to be used as a normal method of mail deliver? Who takes physical possession of the torpedo?

I can see then used as jump capable spamvertisements. Sort of like the street corner sandwich board guys, hawking whatever, trying to shout over the others. Some company or government starts dumping them in the surrounding systems and flood the local data nets with ads or even misinformation.

J-Torps work under HG rule set.
  • No power plant needed to initiate jump by using pre-charged Jump Drive Capacitors.
  • No maneuver drive needed since the lunching ship:
    • Could just drop and move
    • Use a low power accelerator type tube
    • Or just potato gun it out a lunch tube
  • Computer not needed:
    • Lunching ship would calculate jump
    • onboard Nav system can be mostly remote controlled by the lunching ship
    • J-drive onboard controllers can handle the trip just like onboard star ships
  • A small micro fusion reactor can provide power to:
    • The transmitter
    • and/or any other systems
  • Liquid nitrogen tanks can be used to:
    • Cool J-drive
    • And form jump bubble.
  • No life forms, so who cares if a perfect jump would turn living beings insides out. ☠️

LBB5 '80 requires charged capacitors and fuel. (p. 43); this is to clarify that input from the Black Globe can be used in addition to power plant output to reach the 2EP per Jn per 100Td needed to jump in a single turn, even if the power plant can't do it alone in 1 turn.
Pn=Jn required (LBB2 '81 and LBB5 '80).

Minimum drive size (maneuver drive and power plant, and by analogy also the jump drive) is 1Td.

Book 2, 1977, tells us that no vessel under 100 tons can jump. I believe all Traveller rules have followed this since.

Then Adventure 4, Leviathan, introduces jump torpedos. The adventure is published by GDW and uses High Guard rules overall.
CT-bk2-77 mentions them.. bk2 p18... giving no stats. so, A4, written in 1978 or '79... wasn't aware they could cease being canon.

As I stated, we are using High Guard rule set aka CT B05, Jump Drive Capacitors will be pre-charged, sized for the Torpedo and and the drive would be 2% of the dTon of the Torpedo. If we were using CT B02 then the minimum Drive size is 10 dT, but we are not using CT B02.

Don't know why it was done, except maybe the Masters didn't want us sending Message Massacres to their minions. Isn't that why we a are here?
