And yet 1 skill point buys them - should there be a points cost difference?

Some skills cost more than others to buy with your "skill points" (I don't want to reinvent GURPS here :))

In CT, you don't buy skills at all, that's kinda the thing. You are assigned skills. Your career may lead you to the point where you get Recruiting-3 (basically useless outside of a mercenary campaign) or Combat Rifleman-3.

I go broad. Forward Observer becomes recon, but so does hunting. Bribery and Recruiting becomes Persuade, Forgery becomes Deception. Investigation is not just LE but becomes the primary spy and science knowledge skill. At least in my CT version.

I'm in the broad camp as well, and have dispensed with any cascade skills in my CT games: e.g., "Blade" is all melee weapons, "Gun Combat" is all shooting weapons, etc. Couple that change with increased skill rolls/term (3 or 4, depending on the tone I want), and I can get closer to the pulp speculative fiction characters in S1 & S4. Except for Kimball Kinnison: that begs for a whole different system.

I'm a T20 guy. That's right, I'm not ashamed to admit I love using T20!

But this is about 'Does CT Need An Update?' (I voted that it does)

I was introduced to Traveller back in the mid 80's with the '81 edition (I think) and me and my friends enjoyed it very much. I ended up getting the LBB's and Alien Modules and a few other CT items. But life is life and I decided to throw it all away.

Fast forward three decades and I come a cross a T20 in my local library and later get my own copy. I even got GtD a few years later. And I joined the CotI community.

CT has the same problem as every other Traveller Rule Set. Most of the rules work just fine, but some are clunky within the rules they are part of and need to be fixed (polished & streamlined, maybe reworked if needed?) to better fit with the other rules for internal rule consistency.

D&D came out with the D&D Rules Cyclopedia that brought together the 5 boxed sets and some stuff from some supplements into one book. Maybe do something like a CT Cyclopedia that brings together the LBB's and any rules from other CT sources into one book and fix the clunky stuff so it shines bright like the rest of CT.

These are my thoughts and opinions for the most difficult Opinion Poll I've put a vote in.

Oddly other than character generation I think T20 has a bunch of potential... (Though to be brutally honest given my choice Gurps or The fantasy trip are my goto right now, followed by Savage Worlds)

CT as such no, but I point out that CE exists, coupled to MT, and the world of 3rd party products from CTs era onwards. I.e. I have always treated CT as the base module switching out the bits as I saw fit.

I think it had some good ideas, but had the problem of being wedded to WotC's d20 system (not to be confused with GDW's d20 house system).

I like the simplicity of Traveller LBB1-3/The Traveller Book. It presents a very 1970s view of the future, and I like it like that. Maybe some errata could be incorporated into a new edition, but mostly I think Classic Traveller has it right before it complicates itself.

Reading this thread and it seems what the question on the table really is; Do we need another edition/version of Traveller?

I say, not really. With the pile of editions and variations and clones we have today, I can't imagine needing another. But then again, that is just my opinion. I suspect folks will do what they want. LOL

This applies to the question, I think.

T20 would be so much better if it had been built on D20Modern/Future - but that would have required a time machine.;

Conversion is pretty easy :)

I am thinking more of an edit and update.
Yes, I wouldn't want a new edition, just a cleaned up version of CT: at least a re-typeset Facsimile version (though it is what I use today). In my dreams:
  • LBB1 would incorporate the additional careers from S4, consolidate the skills and include new equipment from later supplements (which I've done in my house rules).
  • LBB2 would use the '77 version of starship encounters (chance of Pirates at any class starport)
  • LBB3 would use the '77 version of Jump routes
  • Apocrypha: within each book in-line optional rules (much like CE/CD have), such as heroic or epic characters (i.e., chargen which would allow one to generate the types of characters listed in the backs of S1 & S4), multiple careers, etc. But now I think I've just created CT, edition F...

The 77 version of the game has a section that explains how situation throws and skills are supposed to work, sadly it disappeared from 81 onwards.
The individual skill descriptions of throws are just examples, you are not supposed to do it the same way for every situation. This comes after the skill descriptions and examples of throws.

"Skills and the Referee: It is impossible for any table of information to cover all aspects of every potential situation, and the above listing is by no means complete in its coverage of the effects of skills. This is where the referee becomes an important part of the game process. The above listing of skills and game effects must necessarily be taken as a guide, and followed, altered, or ignored as the actual situation dictates.
In some game situations, actual die roll results must be concealed from the players, at times allowing them to misconstrue the reasons for their success or failure. In other situations, the referee may feel it necessary to create his own throws and DMs to govern action, and may or may not make such information generally available to the players.
In order to be consistent (and a consistent universe makes the game both fun and interesting), the referee has a responsibility to record the throws and DMs he creates, and to note (perhaps by penciling in) any throws he alters from those given in these books."

I would agree it isn’t broke, but Book 6’s system generation and Book 8 robots need some updates. Also the Book 2 Starship creation could use a few updates.
I am thinking more of an edit and update.

CT is definitely NOT *broke*. In fact it still amazes me how I sometimes look back at some of the versatility of the CharGen procedures (especially in S4) in being able to tailor a character a particular way. Even some of the modern "updates" don't quite get it right sometimes.

For LBB2: Starships I do like to bring in some of the material from T5 Book 2: Starships to flesh thing out.

There is also the "Little White Book" (LWB) from FFE on DTRPG. It is all three LBBs in one 5x8 White volume with all of the errata incorporated and variants noted in footnotes or endnotes.

This is close to what I would want as well. I would also want the Ironmongery section from LBB:4. But as I noted above, apart from the Ironmongery and S4, we already have that in the LWB on DTRPG.
